Keeping parents informed about their child’s math practice at home is an important factor in their success in the classroom. There are many ways to help with math at home. Here are some ways you can help families get involved in your child’s learning. Throughout the year, especially at the end of the school year, family involvement is critical to retaining information.
Practical Math Learning
As summer approaches, it’s a good time to start reminding families about the importance of their involvement and what they can do at home to help their children. Practicing math concepts at home doesn’t have to be stressful, time-consuming, or require pencil and paper. By sharing some of these ideas with your families, you’ll show them how easy it is to incorporate math into everyday activities and routines.

Board games: Children love board games. Not only do they encourage screen-free time and encourage family bonding, but they’re often educational too! Some of my favorite things to teach math are Hi, Ho Cherry-O, Yahtzee, and Trouble.
Play with tangible objects: Encourage parents to use anything they have around the house to further develop their child’s sense of numbers. The math tools available in our classroom may not be available to them. However, things like coins, bags of dry beans, stickers and scraps are great for hands-on learning.
Apps and online games: Apps and online games are designed to be attractive and useful to use. There are so many great programs out there, but the one I recommend most for elementary students is ABCMouse.com. It is not only for preschool children, but also for those over 8 years old. Only $7.95 per month (usually the first month is free) – this is a great value summer learning option. There are also free online games like ABCYa.com, Math Playground, and Cool Math Games.
Online Printables: Parents should use the many printable math worksheets that can be found and downloaded online (often for free). It should also be noted that most children need hands-on instruction. Tell parents how important it is to have small objects nearby that students can use to practice math.

Make it a routine: With a bedtime math program, parents can make math a nightly routine with daily questions and printable worksheets to practice with their children.
Discussion: Natural opportunities for parents to discuss math topics with their children occur frequently throughout the day. The best opportunity to refresh some math vocabulary is during daily play. For example, teach parents how to talk about geometry, symmetry, measurement, problem solving, and counting while building with LEGO bricks or drawing with sidewalk chalk.
How to get it right: Mental math is the perfect on-the-go skill exercise. Remind parents that math lessons can be done by asking children questions about any topic that requires them to think of an answer in their head, even if it’s just a short drive. The problem is, “It’s 10 miles from my house to the mall. We had already gone four miles. How far do we have to go?”

Everyday Vocabulary: Give families a list of math terms and concepts you teach in the classroom that you can bring to your children’s everyday lives. Encourage them to come up with one idea per day through natural conversation. In this way, they will help consolidate the concept in the child’s memory. An easy way to do this is to look for icons in your neighborhood while walking around the block.
Playtime: Parents can bring in math concepts throughout the day while playing. Cubes, crayons, toy cars, puzzles and crafts can be used to teach skills such as counting, pattern recognition, comparing and sorting. Children can be taught to tell the time by teaching them the clock. “At 4:00 we clean up and have breakfast. You tell me when it’s time.”
At home: Easily integrates math into everyday kitchen tasks like measuring ingredients, doubling and halving recipe ingredients, counting portions, dividing equal portions, and more. Cooking and baking in this way enables natural learning. Yard work and home improvement are another example of this. While working, you can talk about gardening around the house, measuring, planning, ordering and pattern recognition.
Using money: When children receive allowances, they naturally learn the value of money and how to count it. Offer kids a penny for their summer savings plan or progress toward a goal. Children will learn how to count money and how to exchange small coins for more valuable ones (for example, 10 pence is a penny). Helping children shop at the grocery store can help them learn about money.
Family Engagement Math
Best books: Give parents a list of books to check out at the local library. Maybe use this as a summer reading list or add some of these books to your recommendations. Reading one of these books every day will keep your child’s math skills sharp all summer long.
